And what a difference... ועוד איזה Difference...

The trip started on 4.5.2001. Mom and dad (Orly and Oded, if you didnt' get that yet) thought they were going for a long weekend holiday, that will be their last holiday as a couple (without kids, that is). The holiday was planned as a canal cruise. You may know that in England there are many canals, and they are used nowadays for canal cruising holidays on narrow boats.

The area where mom and dad were going was near Birmingham, starting at a town called Stoke on Trent. They hired a narrow and long and nice boat called Sabina II (yes, every boat has a name, and its always a woman's name). הטיול התחיל בתאריך 4.5.2001. אמא ואבא (אורלי ועודד, אם עוד לא קלטתם) חשבו שהם נוסעים לסוף שבוע ארוך שיהיה החופשה האחרונה שלהם בתור זוג (כלומר בלי ילדים). הטיול היה מתוכנן כשיט תעלות. כידוע, באנגליה יש הרבה תעלות שיש בהן שייט של סירות ארוכות כנופש נחמד.

האיזור שאמא ואבא נסעו אליו היה ליד Birmingham, והתחיל בעיירה שנקראת Stoke on Trent. הם שכרו סירה ארוכה ויפה שקוראים לה Sabina II (כן, לכל סירה יש שם, ותמיד זה שם של אישה).

Those pictures were taken before they started the cruise. The cruise itself was (naturally) planned along the canal. Here is a map of the canals in the area in which they were cruising: התמונות האלה צולמו לפני שהם יצאו לדרך. הדרך עצמה היתה מתוכננת לאורך התעלה (אלא מה?). הנה מפה של התעלות באיזור שהם טיילו בו:

The planned route was from Stoke on Trent, and almost up to Stafford, which is a little to the left of Great Haywood. Its not a long distance to cover in 3 days - the speed of the boat is very symbolic. The distance that the boat can cover in 6 hours can be made by car in ... 20 minutes! Speed is not the issue here.
So they embarked on their journey. What an excitement! To drive a boat that is going so slowly, that walking on the footpath alongside the canal can be faster... but it is a great experience, as they told me. On that day the weather was not very nice, so they had to wear raincoats (because to drive the boat you need to stand outside, on the deck!). אז הם יצאו לדרך. איזו התרגשות! לנהוג בסירה שנוסעת כל-כך לאט, שמישהו שהולך על הגדה לצד הסירה, יכול ללכת יותר מהר... אבל זו חוויה נהדרת, ככה הם אומרים. באותו יום לא היה מזג אויר כל-כך יפה, אז הם היו צריכים ללבוש מעילי גשם כאלה (כי בשביל לנהוג בסירה צריך לעמוד בחוץ!). הנה כמה תמונות שיתארו מה שהיה:

The boat is very organized and contains everything you need. Here is the boat plan: הסירה מאורגנת מאוד ויש בה כל מה שצריך. הנה ככה הסירה מאורגנת:

The kitchen is fully fitted, and you can prepare full meals, and eat them in the dining room: במטבח אפשר להכין ארוחות שלמות, ולאכול אותן בפינת האוכל:

One of the interesting things are the locks. The lock is a basin that enables the passage between different levels of the canal, so that the boat can go up or down, according to the level of the canal. You simply drive the boat into the lock, and then fill or empty the basin (using a special key, or handle, that you have to turn), and then you continue from the other side of the lock. Here is how it is done:
You drive the boat into the lock: אחד הדברים המעניינים הוא ה Locks. ה Lock הוא מעין מעבר מפלסים, כדי שהסירה תוכל לעלות ולרדת, בהתאם לגובה התעלה. פשוט מכניסים את הסירה ל Lock, מעלים או מורידים את גובה המים בתוך ה Lock (בעזרת ידית מיוחדת שצריך לסובב) וממשיכים הלאה. הנה כך:

And then you lower the level of the water and empty the basin (dad dealt with the water levels while mom was driving the boat. Doesn't she look like she is doing this all her life?): ואז מורידים את מפלס המים (אבא טיפל במפלסים ואמא בינתיים נהגה בסירה. נכון שהיא נראית כאילו היא עושה את זה כבר כל החיים?):

Something important about the locks: at first its nice and exciting. Then it becomes a routine, and if you have many locks it becomes a nuisance. So each time you get to a lock, you should exclaim: "Oh, lock!" (which sounds very much like "oh lo", the Hebrew for "oh, no!").
Mom and dad went on with the fun, until the evening spread. So they had to get organized for the night. Its easy: you simply convert the dining room to a badroom: דבר חשוב לגבי הלוק: בהתחלה זה נחמד ומרתק. אחר כך זה מתחיל להיות שגרתי ואם יש הרבה לוקים זה יכול להפוך למטרד. אז כל פעם שמגיעים ללוק צריך להגיד: "אוי, לוק!".
ככה המשיכו להם אמא ואבא בכיף שלהם, עד שנהיה ערב. בלילה הם התארגנו לשינה בסירה. פשוט הופכים את מה שהיה קודם חדר אוכל לחדר שינה:

That was actually the end of their trip, because in the morning I changed all of their plans in a way they had never anticipated! זה בעצם סוף הטיול שלהם, כי בבוקר שיניתי להם את כל התכניות באופן שהם בחיים לא חלמו עליו!
